Overall Approach

  • The scientific approach combines the conventional approaches LBMS modeling, simulation and experimental approaches.
  • The means of mechanical and physical characterization can sweep the scales of the volume element in the specimen or component assembly to the structure using high-capacity equipment.
  • The laboratory is taking care to control up to the entire chain: design, production, implementation, testing, numerical modeling in respect of its approach-testing Confrontation calculations.

Experimental resources

The development of predictive tools and useful for the design of structures has a prominent place in the scientific project of LBMS. This requires to have means testing, measurements and observations covering a wide range of scales (ie, the scale of the microstructure across the mini-structure). Our facilities spread over three locations, can be presented using the pyramid means testing of LBMS.

Found at the base of this pyramid a set of materials to provide information on the scale of the microstructure of materials. In the laboratory, they are commonly used to qualitatively (and sometimes even quantitatively) the models developed. At the intermediate stage, we find the testing machines (electro-hydraulic or electro-mechanical systems) to perform tests on specimens. It is often at this scale that are identified in qualitative and quantitative models. And finally, is the top floor of the pyramid found our test facilities to seek structural elements. These tests are used in most cases to validate the numerical tools.

Manufacturing capabilities

Through its affiliation to institutions of technical education (UBO-Ensieta-Enib), the laboratory has access to their means of design, fabrication and measurement of experimental devices to test. These methods include milling, turning, bending, welding, metrology, ...

LBMS members have access to the computer "DILL" available at ENSIETA and managed by the service ENSIETA Computer (this computer is also used by other laboratories ENSIETA). The computer has 10 nodes and 36 CPUs calculations. The technical characteristics of the computer are:

  • A host node dual-processor with 8GB of memory,
  • 6-node dual-processor with 8GB of memory,
  • 2-node quad-proc with 32 GB of memory,
  • 2-node dual-quad-heart with 64 GB of memory,
  • 2 Gigabit Ethernet controllers,
  • A dedicated storage array type NAS 2 TB capacity,

The main software available on this calculator are: Fluent, Abaqus, Cast3m, Matlab, Scilab.

LBMS members also have access to the computer CAPARMOR II (Shared Parallel Computing for Oceanography and Research) managed by IFREMER. UBO and ENSIETA are associated with cluster computing for the sea This calculator is three hundred and first in the world and the sixteenth largest French in the Top500 .
